‘Charles Causeley Literary Festival’, Launceston

Gribbin Day Mark Open Day, Menabilly

This iconic red and white striped ‘day mark’ was built on Gribbin Head in 1832 to provide a navigational aid to sailors. It is now owned by the National Trust. Climb up the stairs inside the huge 84 foot tower and take in the views from the top of this striking coastal land mark which is clearly visible from Penhale Caravan Park.

The tower is open from 11am until 5pm and it costs £1 to enter (free for members). Booking is not required. The closest car park is at Menabilly Farm, 2 miles from Penhale. It is then a twenty minute walk to the day mark.

Charlestown Heritage Trails

The pretty harbour village of Charlestown was built by the local landowner Charles Rashleigh in the 19th century, to ship copper ore and china clay. At one time there were many businesses alongside the docks, including boat building, net and rope making, and brickworks. The guided walk gives you a chance to learn more about the fascinating history of this beautiful, unspoilt village, which is part of a Cornish World Heritage Site and also home to a fleet of square-rigged sailing vessels.

The village and harbour, as well as the ships themselves, have been used in many well known films and television programmes. Booking is not required. The cost for adults £3, under 16’s are free with an adult. Meet outside the Shipwreck and Heritage Centre at 7pm.

Royal Cornwall Show, Wadebridge

For three days each year the dedicated showground at Wadebridge is transformed into a living town, bustling with life, energy, agriculture, entertainment and trade. It is a significant event on the Cornish calendar with around 130,000 people attending.

This has been Cornwall’s showcase since it was first held back in 1793 and as you’d expect from a county show, a fascinating glimpse into rural life in the county. This wonderful festival thought to be the longest surviving in Cornwall, owes its success to the blend of traditional and contemporary events which brings the whole community together and welcomes hundreds of visitors to share in its unique celebrations.

The weeklong event features exhibitions, demonstrations, live music and lots of fish dishes to eat. Along with choirs and bands, flora dances, children’s entertainment and competitions, plus colourful parades, boat and raft races, a fete and a huge firework display.

From early afternoon every day there is a program of events you can take part in. There’s crab catching on the harbour, a pavement artist competition and a children’s tea for the kids, you can watch fishing boat races on the water, dance along the street in the traditional flora dance, swing your partner at the ceilidh or simply find a seat and enjoy listening to the many choirs and bands that perform during the week. The festival ends with a colourful carnival parading through Mevagissey’s ancient streets and a spectacular firework display from the outer harbour. Most of the festival events are free of charge.

Charlestown Heritage Trails

The pretty harbour village of Charlestown was built by the local landowner Charles Rashleigh in the 19th century, to ship copper ore and china clay. At one time there were many businesses alongside the docks, including boat building, net and rope making, and brickworks. The guided walk gives you a chance to learn more about the fascinating history of this beautiful, unspoilt village, which is part of a Cornish World Heritage Site and also home to a fleet of square-rigged sailing vessels.
