Carnglaze Caverns and The Rum Store
Carnglaze consists of three underground caverns set in the wooded hillside of the Loveny Valley at St. Neot. Created by local slate miners, the caverns are of ‘cathedral’ proportions, and there is a famous subterranean lake with crystal blue-green water. You can take a guided tour, which lasts about 45 minutes, during which time you will descend 150 metres into the hillside and 60 metres below ground.
You can also see a unique display of South West minerals. There is a craft and mineral shop and a refreshment area with vending machines for hot and cold drinks and snacks. There is a picnic area in the gardens.
During the Second World War the Royal Navy used the first of the three caverns at Carnglaze to store rum. In 2001 it was converted into an auditorium with seating for 400. A stunning backdrop to the many varied performances put on throughout the year, the acoustics in the Rum Store are said to be incredible. Check out the website for current performances.
